Greetings and Salutations

Breaking Bad sucks. No, really. It sucks ass.

It seemed to me that where ever I would go, whichever forum, there would persist a constant chatter, a million tiny voices calling out as one to say one thing and one thing only: "BREAKING BAD IS TEH GRATEST SHOW EVAR!" Of course, I was curious.

With the awesome power of the internet, I soon found myself with the entirety of the first two seasons. I couldn't wait to begin, to finally join "The Church of Breaking Bad". With great anticipation, I loaded up VLC and kicked the party off.

As the minutes dragged on and on, I started to grow incredulous. Surely, thought I, something is coming. Something to break the monotonous drone of cliched storylines, stock characters, and wooden acting. The first episode finally crawled to the finish line, and I just sat there in stunned silence. I started rationalizing: many shows are saddled with a substandard pilot, perhaps it will get better. Let's try episode 2. And so I did. When that was a disappointment, I even tried episode 3. As you can probably guess, it too failed to pique even the dimmest spark of interest.

I began to ponder the vast incongruity: Am I so out of touch with reality? How can what is, at best, uninspired mediocrity ignite such passion in the faceless masses? As my investigation unfolded, it inevitably led to a single inescapable conclusion: it's not me it's them.

For too long, television has been defined by the irrelevant wasteland that is modern broadcast television. In a world where reality television is king, and a masterpiece such as The Wire is but a pauper, it only makes sense that Breaking Bad would be considered anything other than refuse. I can no longer tolerate such an outrage. In this blog, I endeavor to show the world their folly. I will sacrifice my own time, my own leisure, to document in detail Breaking Bad's every transgression.

"WHAT THE FUCK BROSEPH? IF YOU DONT LIEK A SHOW, DON'T WATCH IT"

I do this for you, my children. By eviscerating the sacred cow of modern television's rancid sewage, I hope to effect change in this world.

You come at the king, you best not miss. - Omar Little

    1. Thank you! I have been trying to watch this show for years. Once again I made it through about twenty minutes of the second episode and said NO, I WILL NOT LET THIS STAND!

I googled "breaking bad sucks" and your blog was the first hit. I completely concur. The Wire set the standard and this show falls far short. Bad acting (Bryan Cranston needs to be arrested for mugging) , stupid plot, pathetic attempts at humor. I don't get it. Just don't get it.

I must say you are a brave one to continue watching this show, unfortunately my own journey has ended in season 1 episode 2. Before I bid you farewell, I wanted to let you know how much you have enlightened my soul.

  4. I came to this blog by typing "breaking bad sucks" in google. I watched the entire first season because a friend recommended it, I was bored, and I had a lot of time on my hands.

However, not much really happened in the show, it was so boring. I proceeded to watch the first two episodes of the second season, hoping it would be better, but no.

There are no compelling characters. Few interesting things happen, and when something interesting does happen, it isn't satisfactory at all, it is hampered by the framework of shittiness that the show sits in. It's just boring, uncompelling and unimportant.

  6. I actually sat through 2 Seasons hoping it would get better. Yes 2 seasons! I won't say it flat out sucks, but it would be better if about 70% of it got streamlined. They spend way more time on his family life than the drug world. It would be okay if his family life were interesting, but every single person in his family is as you said, such a cliched stock character. Especially his nag of a wife who is, I'm guessing supposed to be the voice of reason? I look forward to hearing what you have to say about this show.

  7. I actually am about to finish the series and have heard from so many respectable people that it is absolutely incredible. It is pretty sub-par. The acting, although Bryan Cranston is great, is so cheesy and not believable at all. The cops are incredibly 'stupid', the comedy is poor. I agree with you.

  8. The acting is as good as you'll see on TV (take a hard look at the genius of RJ Mitte, who really does have CP). And the script and plot are as out-there as creator/writer/producer Vince Gilligan's other series, "The X-Files.I Watch Breaking Bad Online.

  9. Yeah - 99.9% of critics think this show is brilliant. But the law of averages says that some people won't like it. And one of those people will put up a blog post about it.

It's hard to quibble with your TASTES. That's a personal preference. Where you're dead wrong is your assessment of the acting as "wooden". That's just absurd. I've never seen acting like this on TV.

There are shows that I strongly dislike (a couple of examples: Treme/Sex in the City) that I simultaneously admit are well-acted/scripted.

BTW: Season 1 was the weakest season, no doubt. It was strike shortened and somewhat depressing (I still loved it, but it's not everyone's cup of tea). But if you stick with it...it pays off.

  10. I was looking for shows to watch after The Wire, and I came across Breaking Bad.

Most people had nothing but good things to say about it, so I gave it a try. I ended up watching all three seasons of it, and almost gave up several times throughout.

That being said, I don't think it even comes close to The Wire. How I got through all three seasons of it, I have no idea. Breaking Bad felt too unrealistic most of the time, and that's what ruined it for me. The Wire had characters that were total douche bags, but they all still felt like real people, not assholes that came on the tv screen just to piss people off.

I didn't mind watching Stringer treating everyone like shit and being a total dick 99% of the time. I didn't mind watching Herc fucking everything up for everyone by being such a dumb shit. It was all good even when I didn't like the characters because it was interesting to watch them, because each character always led to a purpose other than a big shock moment like "oh shit, he just killed that guy WOW! I totally didn't see that coming!"

Okay, I'm pretty tired right now as I write this, and I don't know exactly what I want to say, but I'll finish by saying I don't think Breaking Bad deserves half the praise it gets. The Wire observes almost every aspect of a city realistically and presents the problems to its viewers. I'm not sure exactly what Breaking Bad is trying to do except say "Crime doesn't pay." I'm not saying every show should be as broad as The Wire, and maybe I'm wrong but Breaking Bad has a sort of judgmental tone to it that just gets on my nerves. It feels like a crime story being told by someone who doesn't know anything about it.

If you're a big fan of The Wire who is having trouble getting over it, you should definitely check out Generation Kill, The Corner, and Treme.

  11. Breaking bad is not a show for the slow minded.. You have to be intelligent to fully grasp how phenomenal the acting is... I have been an avid fan of the show since the beginning. I was a senior in high school when the pilot was aired, and I could see the brilliant potential from the very first episode. This is truly the best show on t.v. The acting is the best I have ever seen. The plot is hilariously disturbing, yet brilliant and entertaining. The director is a god, literally bringing out every actors full potential in every scene. The plot is unpredictable, and I feel that the characters are very relatable. Breaking Bad will solidify it's place amongst the greatest of all time.

  16. I wasn't crazy about the 1st 3 episodes either, but there was nothing bad to be said about a story that knows how to pace itself and consistently improve rather than desperately cling to a good introductory idea. In fact, I'm sure the Breaking Bad 'craze' isn't derived from the pilot of the series, the only part you seem to want to judge. Most people, myself included, saw potential--not phenomenon at the beginning. It paid off, time and time again.

Let's be honest. This blog was started about 2 years ago, and you've left 4 entire seasons of "transgressions" undocumented, only a few blog comments worth of "change in the world", and roughly 1 out of millions of viewers can even appreciate your voice. Looks as if episode 4 and onward has left you with not much to bitch about. In that case, enjoy the remainder of the series my friend.

  19. Gotta love watching the self righteous yuppies claiming "you aren't intelligent enough to enjoy this show" if you don't have any use for it. Cable has become for the middle aged snobs of the world and shows like this and HBO's entire current lineup reflect this.

The writers have WAY too much power in Hollywood and TV just isn't fun anymore. And they wonder why reality TV spawns more stars than scripted TV does...

  20. I was looking for legitimate criticism on the show when i googled "breaking bad sucks", although to be fair it wasn't the best thing to search for if I wanted something even remotely interesting.
Either way, I understand that you don't like Breaking Bad, but those six or seven paragraphs that you wrote present no real argument against the quality of the show. You just present your opinion as fact, which doesn't help the "guy that just doesn't get it" image you give yourself. It's a shame because this post just adds to all the other comments about the show with no real substance. It's just "the story line sucks" or "the acting is bad", without explaining why. As a film enthusiast and a screenwriter myself, I strongly believe that the writing and cinematography of Breaking Bad is top notch. Don't write stuff if you haven't got anything to say. Peace.

  21. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. The plot unfolds slowly because it's a serial drama. Perhaps you'd be better suited to the likes of Fast and Furious?
It's highly apparent to me that you sped into this show with every intention of hating it (which is a bit of a shame because it really is magnificent), but if it really helps to fuel your bitter and snarky attempts to stand out and hollowly whine about revolution for the sake of standing out and hollowly whining about revolution, go right ahead.
But you seem intelligent (or just articulate, in which case, never mind), so I'd recommend you start acting like it and actually give this show a chance.

  22. The people who say this show sucks are the people who think characters like Hank are actually cheesy and not funny, they don't comprehend the idea that Hanks character is written to be a stereotypical alpha male cop and he does a brilliant job portraying an ass. They can't possibly accept that Season 1 was DEVOTED to portraying the banality of Walt and his family life, but for a reason. Walts wife isn't just a dumb bitch, Hank is not just a cheesy ass, Jesse is not just inept and the show isn't just boring. If you don't understand that these are traits written into the show for a reason, it went way over your head, and if you can honestly make these claims while simultaneously saying season 2 of the wire wasn't, you're lying to yourself. Now do me a favor and write a blog about how Sons of anarchy and The walking dead are awesome...Id love to hear what kind of shit you find to be your favorite.

  23. It's kind of hard to 'enlighten' people when you don't actually present any kind of argument as to why Breaking Bad isn't a good show. My suspicion is that you can't, because it is.

Dismissing the show as a 'cliched storyline' full of 'wooden acting' is basically the equivalent of saying that 'A' is 'B': then wrongness of what you're saying is so glaringly self-evident that I can't even defend the show with a reasonable argument. The fact that your promise to "sacrifice my own time, my own leisure, to document in detail Breaking Bad's every transgression" was immediately abandoned sort of proves my point.

But I'm glad you did give up, because I don't get the impression you're actually qualified to write on this subject. Or write at all, for that matter:

"television has been defined by the irrelevant wasteland that is modern broadcast television"

Take away the modifiers in that sentence and what we're left with is:

    "television defined by television"

    Good work, pal.

First theres hank, he has a family and cancer, yet he turns down a job with insurance to sell meth. WTF is wrong with this retard?? Then there's the shoplifting bitch, hated her sooo much I dont even remember her name, the gossiping and whining wife. I could go on and on, honestly I disliked the show so much I'm probably mixing up the characters.

    1. This show is a prime example of a series written by writers FOR writers. It's nothing more than a character study that seems to exist solely for snobs and yuppies to write book reports dissecting the characters, not to entertain. To us non hipsters, it's total shit.

  25. I came here for the same reason everyone else did, I googled "breaking bad sucks". I'm somewhere in the middle of season 2 and have to say I really like the directing job and most of the acting and characters, and I can see why so many people seem to be fond of it. But the plot and storyline sometimes just baffle me. I can't get over the fact that a man claiming to do everything for his family couldn't take a job he loves or cash from a "friend" for medical bills to rather cook meth, and even if he was such a weird lunatic and needed more money, he could have still taken the money and additionally cook meth to make some more.

So please someone here tell me this will all make sense to me later down the (breaking bad watching) road.

And for those looking for a show to watch if they don't like breaking bad to much, watch Veronica Mars, I haven't seen anything like it before. It jumps the line of Drama and Comedy with the most ironic touch I haven't even thought is possible and the characters range from swampy shallow to pitchblack deep.

Thanks for providing google with an easy way to find trolls.

For anyone still reading, I've noticed a the majority of people on here have stopped watching during season 1 or 2. That is a bad decision, I love BB but I'll admit the first two seasons move slowly, season three puts the show on a whole different level and it only gets better from there.

    Season: 1>4>5>3>2

I loved every season though, I'm telling you watch the pilot again.

I wouldn't say it's the best show out there, in regards to content/context/acting/character arcs/ect., but it's defiantly one of my favorite.

Dexter's a ridiculously stupid show but it's fun to watch.. kinda.

  29. Breaking Bad does suck. Not a single character is believable at all and almost every god damn line stinks like cheese. I can't handle it, I frequently have to be stuck with people who love it and want to watch it for three straight hours and in order to be respectful I have to repress these overwhelmingly intense urges to laugh, cry, break the T.V. with a hammer. The hardest part is that people claim that it's a great story with a good script and acting when it's all of these things that make me ill. If people claimed it as a "guilty pleasure" it would be a little more tolerable but instead everyone insists on calling this hunk of shit gold.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I like Breaking Bad, however my issue with it is that it feels like it's a soap opera. Too many episodes are like blah blah blah blah then end with a CLIFFHANGER. wash. rinse. repeat.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have a problem with this blog, but not because it bags on the show. Personally I like the show a lot, but that's merely a matter of my own opinion. I'll even admit I skimmed over a few episodes for being dull. What I have problem with is the people who slam the ones who have a positive opinion of the show. Sure, some of the arguments may just be "you're wrong and the show is good" but that doesn't automatically make them a "queer dumb fuck cock sucking fag."

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow, so many people watch two episodes and brand this absolute masterpiece as derivative, with sub par acting and god knows what other rubbish. I'll admit the show can be slow, especially at the beginning and I too thought that the hype was unjustified. But I kept watching because of all the seemingly universal acclaim and I can honestly say in my opinion that Breaking Bad is the greatest TV show of all time! Season 1 was simply amazing and the show sky rockets from there with each season! From the very beginning the show builds its plot meticulously and perfectly, never slipping up. This attention to detail is what I'm assuming the people who don't like the show complain about (although they would ignorantly phrase it as boring, dumb and insufferable). The show does this to solidify and perfect its plot, which never slips up. I dont understand why people dislike the plot. It is simple and incredibly original! People complain about the characters and how unlikeable they are. How can you possibly not find Saul Goodman hilarious? How can you possibly not be in awe at how much Walter changes as the show progresses? A quiet high school chemistry teacher who transforms into this vicious, unrecognizable monster of a man? Jesse is a phenomenal character. If you watched the show, do you ever consider how much you can sympathize with Jesse no matter what he's done but you can't with Walter. I appreciate things like the beautifully desolate backdrop that is Albuquerque even though I despise desert imagery, and yet the cinematography is simply incredible! And the most ridiculous argument I've seen as I skimmed the comments is that the acting is bad. I cannot imagine what you think acting is. Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Jonathan Banks, Bob Odenkirk are nothing short of stellar actors! There are so many scenes that are just so incredible where these actors are magnificent! Author, if you have watched more of the show as you say you will (back in 2010) I want to know if your opinion has changed. I'd really be shocked if you had seen it and your opinion has not completely changed.
